Review

In the Hindi adaptation of Trivikram Srinivas’s Telugu blockbuster Ala Vaikunthapurramuloo (2020), Kartik Aaryan finds an appropriate outlet for his arrogant on-screen attitude. One of the producers of Shehzada, a manufactured comedy melodrama that takes inspiration from Trading Places and Bawarchi, is Aaryan.

On the same day that his wealthy boss Randeep (Ronit Roy), Valmiki (Paresh Rawal) gives birth to a boy. When Randeep’s child seems to have passed away at delivery, Valmiki gives up his own child as payment. However, Valmiki chooses to keep up the lie after learning that Randeep’s child is still alive because he believes it would provide his son a better life.

While Raj (Ankur Raathee), Valmiki’s son, is the erratic Raj as he grows up under Randeep’s care as Bantu (Aaryan).

Despite being mistreated by his adoptive father, Bantu grows into a self-assured young man who challenges villains and seduces lawyer Samara (Kriti Sanon).

Rohit Dhawan’s “additional screenplay” credit is undeserved. Ala Vaikunthapurramuloo’s highlights are almost all retained in Dhawan’s adaptation, whereby just minor changes are made to the original. Shehzada faithfully recycles a tried-and-true pattern, right down to the hero’s name, the slow-motion action sequences, the character arcs, and the humorous moments.

Even in both movies, Sachin Khedekar portrays the grandfather. The elimination of Bantu’s sexist comments on his lover’s fondness for short skirts is essentially the only change, and it is a good one.

This does not imply that Kriti Sanon is involved in the Telugu film more than Pooja Hegde.
